When it comes to women who run the world, I believe that Betsy DeVos is definitely one of them. Having graduated from Calvin College where she earned her bachelor of arts, Betsy started her calling early. She became involved with campus politics, which she is still actively involved to date. Her desire for change can be attributed to the fact that she is surrounded by reformers just like her.
We cannot forget her husband Dick DeVos, with whom, they have four children and six grandchildren. Her husband was also a Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan. Apart from being a nominee for governor, her husband is also an entrepreneur, philanthropist and community activist. Together, they were involved in passing Michigan’s first charter-school bill in the year 1993.They say that behind every successful man there is a woman. Well, in this case, I believe the saying goes both ways.
One woman’s Passion unifies the learning system
Betsy DeVos currently serves as the 11th secretary of education in the U.S. She has a passion for education. This passion was sparked at a tender age by her mother who was a teacher. Betsy realized that not every child in the U.S. has a chance to receive an education. This realization came when she was older and was sending her own children to school. She has had a chance to interact with at-risk children, something which is remarkable. Apart from her experience in education, Betsy has also served on the boards of many charitable organizations. A good example is Kids Hope USA, Mars Hill Bible Church and much more.
Betsy Devos pursued changes through non-profit roles and is the head of Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Her biggest philanthropic work has been the fight for less privileged children, to get a chance in education like every other child.
It takes one act of kindness to impact a less privileged
She has been involved in starting up of scholarships for families that are not well off. This has given an opportunity to many children that would have otherwise been lost in the system if a person like Betsy had not shown up. Through her program, there are 250,000 students in 33 publicly funded and private programs in 17 states.
In Florida, Betsy has had her biggest success. Florida has enjoyed the longest in the widespread educational choice, with over 50,000 students attending the schools that they desire. With a desire for the less privileged children to get an equal footing in society, in terms of education, Betsy is making this dream a reality. With her place as the secretary for education, she is hoping to change the current education as we know it and provide equal chances for the same education quality to all students.
