How Jake Gottlieb Used His Education As A Doctor To Become A Top Investor

Jacob Gottlieb is an entrepreneur who works in the financial industry. He is trained as a medical doctor but has worked as an investor throughout his professional career. He grew up in the Flatbush area of New York City and is a graduate of Flatbush High School. He moved to Rhode Island in order to attend the Ivy League school Brown University. He graduated from this university with a bachelors degree in economics. He then attended the New York University School of Medicine. He completed both his MD at this school as well as his medical internship.
In 1998, Jake Gottlieb joined the brokerage and research firm Sanford C. Bernstein. He worked on the buy side as a researcher where he worked with global equities. Two years later he took a position as a portfolio manager at Merlin Financial and a year after that he co-founded Balyasny Asset Management in the same position as well as a partner. He stayed at this firm for four years. This is an investment management firm that is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
It was in 2005 that Jacob Gottlieb co-founded his second business, Visium Asset Management, LLC. His company focused on investing in companies in the healthcare industry. He was this firm’s chief investment officer and under his leadership its hedge fund reached $3.5 billion in assets under management. His education as a doctor was invaluable in this role due to his knowledge of medicine and the healthcare industry.
Jacob Gottlieb is a dedicated philanthropist. He has worked with three nonprofits which are Covenant House, Math for America, and Robin Hood. His work with Robin Hood involves fighting poverty in the city of New York. About 1.8 million people live in poverty in New York City, one of the wealthiest cities on the planet. For every dollar they use to fight poverty they help a poor person earn $12 in income. 100% of all donations to Robin Hood go towards helping those in the New York community.
