During US history, there has been a number of paradons issued by presidents and some of them have been controversial while others have not. In the latest issues of pardons, the current President issued a pardon to Joe Arpaio, the sheriff from Maricopa County in Arizona. You might have heard about him from the scandal surrounding the wrongful imprisonment of the Village Voice owners known as Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin.
It was just a little over 10 years ago that the story started. It was the sheriff’s antics that the pair of men had started to uncover thru their voices in the Village Voice. Since being inaugurated into office in 1992, the sheriff had been under scrutiny for his attacks on Tent City and various orders which were brought forth against women and inmates. Those who were especially under attack included immigrants and their statuses.
In one particular case, the sheriff had been instructed that during his time serving as sheriff, it was not admissible to hold immigrants due to the suspicion of their statuses and he was reprimanded by the United States District Judge Murray Snow.
It was due to his non-compliance that Joe Arpaio became a leading story in the Village Voice. Because the sheriff insisted on racial profiling, he also encouraged his employees to do the same. It was later that the sheriff gained attention for numerous reporters due to his controversy.
Unfortunately the pair of men who gained the most attention due to his non-compliance were Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey.
